In a previous comment I mentioned the great book “Painting with Light” by John Alton. When you google that expression, you get some amazing photography that takes it literally.

The idea is that one uses a dark room, a long exposure and minimal aperature, and then “paints” with a torch. With the right timing, you get phantastic results.
