Blur Ray doesn't seem like it will be able to compete as it is just too expensive right now. And the local shops here in my country are charging a hell of a lot more as well, so I am definitely staying away from Blu Ray.

I think it will hurt Blu-Ray, as there won't be any small scale runs of Blu-Ray DVDs coming. Thus no companies will need to buy Blu-Ray players. No wedding videos will be made on Blu-Ray. No transfer of home videos to Blu-Ray.
I believe that this licensing policy will hurt both Sony and Blu-Ray's popularity. Sony seems overly greedy, caring only for big releases.
I for one have no plans on buying a Blu-Ray player. And devices such as the Apple TV seems to be more leading the way into the future, using non-proprietary formats.
