Disappointment, defeat and despair are the tools God uses to show us the way.

From Paulo Coelho’s great book, Brida. If you want to hang it on your wall, here’s a PDF version.

Life advice by Steve Jobs

Just came across this Stanford speech by Apple CEO Steve Jobs. At times full of insight, at others surprizingly personal.

Privileges of a late birth

As I was listening to tonights fireworks, I thought that for my generation (i.e. born after the 1940s), the sounds of firecrackers have a totally different meaning. For us these sounds are solely connected to joy. To my parent’s generation, they could mean destruction and death.

Wouldn’t it be great if there could come a time where to every single person on earth “war” was only an abstract word?

Thank you, past

I also had a moment of utter gratefulness to all those generations having lived and strived before me, making it possible for me to live in such good conditions.

Thank you, people of the past.

And a healthy, exciting, creative MMIIX 2008 to all of you.

1.2 Rolls of Kitchen Paper…

…is what you need when your 2 1/2 year old opens the fridge and you subsequently have to clean off 16 smashed eggs.

2…

…is the number of eggs that actually survive such a fall.

Advocating a time bubble

Ever since returning to Norway on a windy evening last week, at least one member of my family has been down with flu, coughing, sweating, general quirky unwellness. As it seems, now it is my turn. Which is especially excellent timing, since I am about to embark on a 3-day shoot in the mountains of Norway — thankfully indoors, tripod (which I foresee to be mostly locked), documenting.

Wouldn’t it be great if, whenever you become ill, you could invoke a time bubble. Life around would just stop — no bills to pay, no kids needing attention, no jobs-that-cannot-wait. Only once you are fine again, would life return to its normal pace, picking up where you left for recuperational purposes.

If only…

Layout

I’ve been tweaking a bit on the new theme I am using (which I was sort-of forced to do after a certain incident with an unlucky upgrade of WordPress), and cleaned up a bit in the plug-in list. The new WP has a nice feature that alerts you to available updates for your plug-ins, right from the admin area. But as it turns out, there are plenty of plug-ins that are not registered as outdated, even though there are newer versions available. Also, somehow the Postalicious plug-in, that powered my SurfFoo posts, no longer does its job. Which might be good as well, as it is better to focus on original content, rather than passing on links. Right?

What do you think of the general feel of the new theme — and are there certain things that annoy you, things that you miss? (And who is the first to point out the error in the main picture? Hint: I am just following a Sony marketing tradition ) )

Off to bed, to recuperate.
